Resident of Spring Green, Sauk County, since 1975. Proximity to the Wisconsin River was a factor in choosing to settle here. Testified before the Natural Resources Board in 1978 in Prairie du Chien regarding the proposed inclusion of the Lower Wisconsin River in the Federal Wild & Scenic Rivers program. Spoke in favor of protection of the resource by the State but opposed Federal designation. Argued that local residents would better support regulations that were developed and administered in Wisconsin rather than Washington. While editor of the Home News in Spring Green, mounted a successful campaign to convince the DNR to place signs at popular public access points, warning waders and swimmers of the dangers posed by swift currents and sudden drop-offs.
“I have spent time on the River in canoes and motorized craft and appreciate the value of preserving this outstanding resource for present and future generations. I consider the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway to be the equivalent of a State and locally administered National Park. I have great respect and appreciation for the way that I have observed LWSRB Executive Director Mark Cupp and the Riverway Board administer the Riverway law and regulations. Communication and cooperation are emphasized in the effort to balance the public benefit with the interests and rights of private land owners.” He serves as Board Chairman.
